What the papers say [Paper]
- BJSM 2018 narrative review: despite person-to-person differences, ≥100 steps/min is a consistent heuristic (evidence-based, rounded) value tied to absolutely defined moderate intensity (~3 METs) in ostensibly healthy adults.
- CADENCE-Adults lab studies support the same practical threshold: heuristic ~100 steps/min for absolutely-defined moderate (~3 METs) across adult age bands they tested (with age-band papers refining nearby values; 100 remains the public-health-style rounded heuristic we use).
We are not claiming these papers convert JAMA’s 8,600 / 10–12k / 12,000 daily step totals into minutes. They ground cadence → intensity, which we reuse as a simple steps÷100 clock.

Catch [Inference] (must stay visible)
Dividing a daily step total by 100 estimates walking time only if those steps were continuous ambulatory walking at ~100 steps/min. Real days mix incidental, slower, stop-and-start steps. So the minutes are an approximate translation aid for dual units on the board — not a lab stopwatch of continuous moderate walking.
